How to Choose the Right Office Chair

Have you shopped for an office chair lately? There are so many options out there; it can be a muddy, complicated task.  Don’t just opt for the most stylish or expensive option, assuming it will suit your needs. Instead, shop smart.

Identify your needs

First of all, what do you need anyway? If you’ve got a lower back problem, you’ll want to invest in a chair with a high quality, adjustable back rest. If you’re on the shorter side, you might want a chair without a ton of height to it – or consider adding a foot rest to the mix. Sit in your current office chair and ask yourself, “What’s missing?” And then go from there.

Choose the right back rest

High backrests might even include a head rest. These are very comfortable, and meant for stationary employees – like the administrator or copywriter who doesn’t get a lot of opportunity to leave their desk. Great for the employee glued to her computer, the mid backrest will top-out around the shoulders. If you find yourself moving around a lot – leaning forward to take notes, sketch or otherwise – a low back rest might be for you. A low backrest chair provides crucial low back support and is easily maneuverable.

Consider the chair’s material

Mesh is light and breathable, keeping you cool and dry. And a mesh chair is no-muss no-fuss, requiring little maintenance. It’s also a lightweight chair, meaning it’s easy to move around the office. Consider keeping these in work stations and the conference room. But if you’re looking for a sturdy, eye-pleasing chair for reception, you might want to consider a heavier, stylish leather chair. These are also great options for employees who find themselves stationary much of the day. Just keep in mind that leather requires a little more upkeep.

Find proper arm support

The number of armrest features available these days is incredible. If you need some extra width, look for a chair with arms that adjust toward, and away from, the body. Height adjustable arms are just as important, since your arm should rest at ninety degrees.

Gauge its depth

If you’re tall, look for a chair with lots of seat depth. And so it goes, if you’re on the shorter side, look for a shallow seat. You want your thighs to be fully supported when sitting, and for your knee to bend just past the edge of the chair.
